Wild hogs have an omnivorous diet, meaning they eat a wide variety of foods. That was just a big word meaning they eat everything. Their diet can include:
- Plant matter: Wild hogs consume roots, tubers, bulbs, fruits, berries, nuts, grasses, and various types of vegetation.
- Invertebrates: They feed on insects, worms, snails, and other small invertebrates found in the soil.
- Dead animals: Wild hogs scavenge for dead animals, think road kill and other dead hogs. I personally saw this near Ocala years back.
- Small vertebrates: They may prey on small mammals like rodents, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.
- Agricultural crops: Wild hogs are notorious for causing damage to crops such as corn, soybeans, rice, and wheat. They also feed on agricultural roots and tubers. Pigs love orange peels, which is weird knowledge you probably didn’t have this morning when you woke up. They also eat corn and other feed of course.
Overall, wild hogs are opportunistic feeders and will consume whatever food sources are readily available in their environment. This adaptability contributes to their success as invasive species in many regions around the world. As I said above, I’ve seen them snacking on orange peels after they have been processed for their juice. Regardless of where they are, they eat about anything and everything.
