Why do people spear hogs?

People spear hogs for several reasons, primarily for hunting purposes. Spear hunting is often chosen due to the challenge it presents and the sense of skill and connection with nature it provides. This is often done in conjunction with the use of hunting dogs. The hunting dogs will pursue the hogs and get them out of cover in Palmetto Scrubs in Florida. The hunting dogs then hold and grab the hogs for the hunters to pursue and kill with the spears. Hunting dogs are also used in hunting with firearms, but take a very different role when spears are used.

Additionally, hog spear hunting is sometimes employed as a method of controlling wild hog populations, which can cause significant damage to crops and ecosystems if left unchecked. It’s also worth noting that spear hunting may be conducted for cultural or traditional reasons in certain communities.

This is a very different sort of hunting than the rifle and firearm hunts I generally do. Nonetheless, it is a very popular means of hog hunting especially in the Central Florida area. As always, keep hunting and stay safe out there.
